Fox Creek Covered Bridge & Lily Park: A Peaceful Stop in Schoharie, New York

Often, the best travel discoveries aren’t famous landmarks. They’re places you stumble across while taking the scenic route.

That was how we found the Fox Creek Covered Bridge in Schoharie, New York.

It’s not one of New York’s historic covered bridges, and you won’t find tour buses lined up to see it. Instead, it’s a quiet pedestrian bridge leading to a beautifully maintained public garden—a place where you can slow down, listen to the creek, and enjoy the peacefulness of it all.

About Fox Creek Bridge

Also known as the Schoharie Bridge, the Fox Creek Covered Bridge is a pedestrian-only bridge spanning Fox Creek in the heart of Schoharie.

Although it looks like a traditional covered bridge, it’s actually a modern replica. Designed by Albany native Gerald Waldbillig and completed in 1982, the bridge was built to reconnect the last two homes on the opposite side of the creek with the village.

Its wooden Town Lattice appearance gives it plenty of historic charm, even though the decorative structure sits on a concrete arch rather than serving as the bridge’s support.

Halfway across, it’s worth stopping for a moment to look out at the creek before continuing into the gardens beyond.

Lily Park

Cross the bridge and you’ll arrive at one of Schoharie’s prettiest hidden gems.

Lily Park Sign, Schoharie, NY

Lily Park is a volunteer-maintained public garden created between 2015 and 2017 by members of the Schoharie Garden Club and local volunteers. You can tell it’s a labor of love. Every flower bed, pathway, and garden vignette has clearly been cared for by people who enjoy sharing the space with visitors.

There are benches throughout the park, along with picnic tables and even a grill if you’d like to linger over lunch.

One of my favorite discoveries was the collection of whimsical little garden scenes tucked throughout the park. Keep an eye out for the tiny gnome home hidden among the flowers—it definitely made me smile.

On the north side of the park, several short paths lead down toward Fox Creek, offering peaceful spots to watch the water flowing by.

It’s not a large park, but that’s part of its charm. Rather than rushing through, it’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself lingering a little longer than you intended.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The park is at its peak during lily season, typically from July through early August, when the flowers are in full bloom.

Every year on the second Saturday in July, Lily Park hosts the Schoharie Lily Festival, featuring craft vendors, local food, children’s activities, and live entertainment. Admission and parking are free, making it a wonderful community event if your visit happens to coincide.

We’ve also visited in September, just as the first hints of autumn were beginning to appear. Even without the lilies in bloom, the gardens were beautifully maintained, and the early fall colors gave the park a peaceful atmosphere.

Places to Eat Nearby

One of the things we enjoy most about exploring small towns is finding local places for lunch.

Our favorite stop in Schoharie is the Apple Barrel Country Store & Cafe. It’s become our go-to whenever we’re in the area, serving hearty lunches alongside shelves filled with country gifts and local products.

The Carrot Barn is another excellent stop, especially if you’re looking for fresh produce, baked goods, or something sweet to take home.

Final Thoughts

The Fox Creek Covered Bridge and Lily Park probably won’t make many “Top 10 New York Attractions” lists. But, that’s what makes them special.

It’s a quiet corner of the Schoharie Valley where you can cross a covered bridge, wander through lovingly tended gardens, enjoy a picnic beside the creek, and slow down for an hour or two.

These are often the places we remember most.

If you’re already exploring the Schoharie Valley—or taking the scenic route through upstate New York—this little hidden gem is well worth adding to your day.
